The Welsh technology industry employs nearly 27,000 people (source: Cambridge Econometrics, 2007) in research, design, development and manufacturing. This is approximately 1.9% of the private sector workforce in Wales. It contributes more than 2% to Welsh GVA. It is very diverse. Generally, the technology industry can be considered as having four main sectors: - software

There are more than 300 medium and large companies according to this definition. However, including the large number of micro businesses that could be classed as technology companies, the total figure may be as great as 3,000.
