International Secondments

Introduction

The DTI International Secondments service offers UK businesses the chance to place a member of staff in an overseas world-class company for between three months and a year. An international secondment increases understanding of leading edge technologies and best practice that can help the competitiveness of UK companies at home and abroad sometimes quite dramatically.

The Opportunity

The DTI service is open to businesses from any discipline for a secondment to any country to learn best practice and to improve productivity. A company can gain improved performance from benchmarking against international standards, by seeing for itself how new technologies and methods are employed, and adapting and applying the lessons learned.

The service provides both financial help and practical companies with up to 250 employees. The DTI grant provides about 50% of the direct costs of the secondment and there is also financial help for language and cultural training if needed.

The main objectives of the programme are to:

  • Help UK companies improve their competitiveness by learning from and adapting the better techniques and management practices available in world-class companies overseas.
  • Creating and strengthening links with companies overseas to develop trading relationships.
  • Improve performance, reduce costs and increase customer base.
  • Develop an understanding of foreign business practices by experiencing them in their own social and cultural contexts.
